Chittoor cops probe threat letter'
The letter mentions five terrorists gunned down by the police on April 7 in TS and warned about a series of attacks in retaliation.
Chittoor: A ‘threat letter’ allegedly written by an outfit calling itself “The Base Movement”, received by the deputy commissioner of Commercial Taxes in Chittoor in April this year, created a flutter in Chittoor district on Monday.
The letter written on the letter pad of ‘The Base Movement’ began with the invocation: “Ïn the name of Allah”, and had a photograph of Osama Bin Laden at the bottom and the Map of India printed on it.
The letter mentions five terrorists gunned down by the police on April 7 in TS and warned about a series of attacks in retaliation.
The letter ends after indirectly claiming responsibility for the bomb blast in Chittoor Court. Police jumped into action and formed teams to investigate after the official forwarded the letter to Chittoor SP on April 23.
Sources said that the police has identified some groups involved in using explosives to create terror in the various parts of South India. The groups make use of media reports on bomb blasts to claim funds from terrorist groups expressing solidarity with them.
The police teams picked up some persons for questioning from Vellore, Vaniambadi, Amburu, Coimbatore and Chennai and are keeping a watch on their movements.
A police official said that their operation was to identify those behind the letter and those responsible for the bomb blast at Chittoor. However, most of these anti-social elements are under the scanner of central intelligence agencies. Chittoor SP G. Srinivas said that it cannot be confirmed that the letter came from an extremist outfit.
He said that they found close similarities between the explosion in Chittoor court and the recent bomb blast at Kollam in Kerala and investigation has been stepped up in this regard.
