Berhampore: The Income Tax (I-T) department has recovered nearly ₹70 lakhs in cash during a 19-hour raid and search at Sagardighi Trinamul Congress MLA Bayron Biswas' properties in West Bengal for tax evasion.

The wads of cash were found at his Natun Dakbunglaw residence in Dhuliyan of Murshidabad late on Wednesday night, according to I-T sources.

Some documents of bogus companies were also seized during the I-T raid that had begun at around 5 am on Wednesday and ended at around 1 am on Thursday.

The TMC MLA fell ill twice during the marathon raid and search which included his questioning by the I-T sleuths. He was taken to his nursing home for brief treatment due to his high diabetes and ailments.

Mr Biswas however claimed, “It wasn't illegal  money which the I-T has seized. It is very much legal and was kept for the scheduled wages payment in cash to the workers of my Bidi factory and others businesses."

The I-T raid covered his residence, bidi factory, bidi godown, tea packaging factory, tea delivery shop, a private hospital, a school and a chemical hub in Dhuliyan, Samserganj, Jangipur and Suti of Murshidabad and one place each in Birbhum and Malda.
