Kerala: Notorious thief Titanic Biju', sidekick arrested

The thieves were nabbed while trying to sell stolen jewels at Dindigal.

Kochi: A notorious thief and his aide have been arrested by cops on Tuesday following a probe into a case related to loot of diamond jewellery worth over Rs 40 lakh from a house in KSN Menon Road here last month. The arrested were identified as Shamir alias ‘Titanic Biju’ (48) and Jeyam (42), a native of Dindigal in Tamil Nadu. According to cops, the theft was committed on January nine last. “One Anuja, currently residing in Chennai, and her sister flied down here to attend a marriage in Pala and came to her aunt’s house at KSN Menon Road. The sisters kept their ornaments in almarah before going to sleep,” police said.

Since the AC was not functioning, the sisters went to sleep after leaving the window open. Shamir struck on the night. “He cut open the mosquito net fixed at the window and used a mop stick to open the half-closed almarah. He then took out the bag containing the jewellery with the help of the mop stick and fled. The households learned about the loot only in the morning and filed a case,” police said. A probe was held by monitoring notorious thieves released from jail in the last few months. “We suspected Titanic Biju and came to know that he was trying to sell jewellery in Dindigal. A team was sent there and they arrested both,” police said.
