Cyber crime victims lose hope to get back money

Visakhapatnam: Victims in cyber crimes in Vizag and other parts of the Andhra Pradesh are losing hope of ever getting their money as investigators have failed to nab the culprits due to lack of speedy support from various network service providers and the legal system have apparently delayed justice to victims in many cases.
The Vizag police said they had been facing numerous hurdles in obtaining the details in cyber crime cases and it’s difficult to recover the loot from cyber criminals. City resident P. Venkata Ramana of Parawada was duped to the tune of Rs1.31 crore by cyber fraudsters in an online lottery fraud in January 2015.
The family paid out all their property to claim the alleged prize money of Rs 5 crore offered by scamsters. Police sources said 308 cyber crimes reported in Vizag and Vijayawada in 2015 but the port city alone accounted as the cyber crime capital in AP with a total of 267 cases.
According to police data, 927 cases were reported with the cyber crime investigation cell, Vizag, since 2010 and over 570 of them were still under investigation. So far, the police arrested 282 cyber criminals and secured convictions of 75 of them.
DCP (Crimes) T. Ravi Kumar Murthy said the delay from the telecom service providers, Facebook and Google and some leading banks in sharing concrete information with cops had been hampering investigations.
