Chennai: Police on Saturday arrested a 58-year-old man, a cook, after he allegedly stole diamond jewellery worth Rs 50 lakh from his employer’s residence in Kilpauk. Police cracked the case within six hours by arresting Mohammad Haneefa.
Haneefa was working as a cook in the house of a businessman, Srinivasan for the past six months. He was earlier employed as a guard in the automobile spare parts manufacturing company in the city, run by the businessman. On Saturday, Srinivasan's wife Reeta noticed that the diamond jewellery in the cupboard was missing. A police complaint was lodged and preliminary investigations revealed that only the cook had come into the house and there were no signs of forced entry.
A police team secured the man and during investigations, he confessed to have stolen the jewellery. The arrested man told police that he stole the jewellery so that he can pledge it and start a biryani joint in neighbouring Tiruvallur district. The stolen jewellery was recovered from him, police said. He was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
