Chennai: City police are probing the role of the relatives of a murdered businessman in connection with the death of a cab driver, whose body was found by the road in Korattur on Tuesday. Prabhakaran (35) was found dead within a week after he was out on bail in connection with a murder case.
Prabhakaran was arrested by the City police in June this year for the murder of a 38-year-old businessman, S Uday Balan. He was found murdered in his residence at Jothi Nagar, Ekkatuthangal near Guindy on June 5. Uday Balan ran an electrical spare parts manufacturing unit at Thirumudivakkam industrial estate near Kundrathur. His parents who reside at Moulivakkam found 36-year-old Udayabalan dead in his duplex house on Jothi Nagar Main Road with deep cuts to the head, hands and legs. His wife, Udaya Lekha was away at Karaikal to visit her parents. She was eventually arrested by the Central Crime Branch of the City police for conspiring with the cab driver to murder her husband.
The woman had told investigators that she was enraged over her husband's consistent insulting remarks at her, despite her being a MCA graduate. Udaya Lekha along with Prabhakaran had plotted to murder the businessman. Prabhakaran fled with jewellery and cash from the home after the murder and was arrested within a fortnight after the murder. Initially, after the arrest, Prabhakaran told cops that he murdered the businessman in a fit of rage as he refused to give him a loan. However, doubts about the role of a family member in the murder led police to his wife, who confessed to the murder.
Meanwhile, Prabhakaran who was released on bail ten days ago was found murdered in Korattur. “We suspect the role of Uday Balan's kin in the murder. Investigations are underway,” a police officer said.
