Hyderabad: Dowry drives techie to death

Hyderabad: A 24-year-old housewife committed suicide at KPHB allegedly due to dowry harassment by her husband. The woman, C. Vijayalakshmi, an engineering graduate, was married to Giribabu, who works as a techie in the city.
Vijayalakshmi, hailing from Hanamkonda in Warangal district, completed engineering and her parents got her married to Kadamanchi Giribabu, belonging to Nalgonda district in November 2016.
Giribabu was working as a techie in a software firm in Madhapur.
In December, the couple shifted to a rented flat on Road No: 3 in KPHB. Since then, he had been harassing her to get more dowry from her parents, police and her parents said.
Vijayalakshmi often informed her parents that Giribabu was assaulting her physically demanding dowry, but they told her to be patient as such things are common in the early days of marriage.
“We gave Rs 15 lakh and other valuables at the time of marriage, but he demanded another Rs 15 lakh as dowry. I thought my daughter would have a better life after marrying a software professional, but never expected he would drive her to death,” Vijayalakshmi’s father Rangaiah, a businessman from Hanamkonda, said.
Her relatives said that Vijayalakshmi was dreaming of a good career and hoped to do so by marrying a software engineering professional.
On Saturday, after Giribabu went out after a quarrel with her, Vijayalakshmi hanged herself on the ceiling fan with a chunni.
Kukatpally ACP N. Bhujanga Rao who is investigating the case said the police registered a dowry death case.
“She did not leave any suicide note, but we are checking details of the incident,” he said.
Vijayalakshmi’s body was handed over to her family after post-mortem, and a hunt is on to nab Giribabu who is absconding since Saturday.
