Complaint of suicide attempt by KMC student in Hanamkonda
WARANGAL: Hanamkonda police on Wednesday registered an attempt to suicide case following a complaint by the father of a second year post graduate student of Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) in Hanamkonda.
The student has been identified as Dr. Daravath Preethi, resident of Kodkandla in Mahabubabad district, who is pursuing her masters in anaesthesia at the KMC.
She is said to have attempted suicide by administering herself a poisonous injection while on duty around 6:30 a.m. at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital.
After seeing Dr. Preethi in an unconscious stage, hospital staff alerted senior doctors, who shifted her to the emergency ward and provided treatment.
Her classmates conveyed the information to KMC principal Dr. Mohan Das and MGM Hospital superintendent Dr. V. Chandrasekhar.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, the KMC principal said Dr. Preethi had been discharging night duty. In the early hours of Wednesday, she informed her team members that she had been suffering from mild chest pain and headache and went into the room allotted to postgraduates for rest. After a while, she became unconscious.
Dr. Mohan Das said Dr. Preethi has some complications like thyroid and immunological disorders. She had also been unable to cope with the work pressure. She may have suddenly become ill due to stress.
MGM Hospital superintendent Dr. Chandrasekhar told DC that soon after they had been alerted, they put Dr. Preethi on ventilator and conducted all tests along with a CT scan. He maintained that they did not find any injection mark on the body of the PG student. Police officials, who examined the room of PG students, did not find any syringe or bottle.
Dr. Chandrasekhar said as multiple organs of Dr. Preethi had got affected, they have shifted her to the NIMS for better treatment.
Dr. Preethi’s father Narendar, who is working with railway police in Hyderabad, rushed to MGM Hospital with his family members on knowing about the incident.
He said two days ago, Preethi had informed them that one of her seniors had been ragging her and she had been unable to bear his torture.
Narendar said his daughter also informed him that the college principal had called both her and the senior student and counselled them. But the situation became worse because of which Dr. Preethi had attempted suicide, her father alleged.
KMC principal Dr. Mohan Das, however, refuted complaints of ragging by senior students. “No such incidents have taken place in the college. Two days ago, I received a call from a police official who inquired about the issue. But the senior students said they never ragged Dr. Preethi but cautioned her about discharging her duties properly,” the principal stated.
Meanwhile, police officials have registered a case of attempted suicide on a complaint lodged by Dr. Preethi’s father Narendar and have started an investigation.
