Chennai: In yet another incident of jilted lover turning killer, a youth burnt his girlfriend alive when she refused to take forward their relationship after he had an accident, while she was walking back home after work on Friday night in Thirumullaivoyil. The youth later set ablaze himself. Both died in Kilpauk Medical College on Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Parthiban, 21 of Bhanu Nagar near Ambattur and Maithili, 20 of Lenin Nagar. Both were working in a clothes shop in Anna Nagar. Parthiban stopped going to work six months back after an accident in which one of his legs was severely damaged. He had been taking rest at home for the last six months. Police said both were in love, but after Parthiban had his accident he could not meet Maithili for many months. She also started avoiding his calls. For the last one week, he had been trying to meet her and convince her to continue their relationship which snapped after he met with an accident.
On Friday night at around 10.30 pm when she was walking to her house via Vivekanada Nagar after getting down from the bus at Thirumullaivoyil Parthiban intercepted her. He was carrying a can filled with kerosene. He told her that if she does not accept his marriage proposal, he would set himself on fire. She tried to walk away after discouraging him. He became furious and poured kerosene over her and himself. He first set her on fire and later set himself ablaze.
Shocked onlookers took them to Kilpauk medical college where both died on Saturday morning, police said. Police noted that two were in a relationship for the past two and a half years. However, after the accident, he quit his job. Mythili’s father, a tailor, too fell ill and was bedridden. She became the breadwinner of the family as her two sisters were married off. Because of this, she wanted to end the relationship with Parthiban.
