Toddler slips to death from second floor
Building norms violation costs a child's life.
COIMBATORE: In a poignant tragedy, a one-and-a-half-year old boy fell off the balcony of his apartment while playing and died in RS Puram area in the city. The boy, Nithish, son of Nekkaram, 24, a goldsmith, was playing in the portico of the second floor apartment in Thyagi Kumaran street in RS Puram on Friday evening, when the incident happened. “Unfortunately, Nithish playfully fell through the gap of the parapet railings, while his parents were not around. The gap was so wide that it had let the toddler pass through it,” said a cop on Sunday.
The boy, who fell on cement flooring, suffered severe injuries all over his body. The panicked family members had immediately rushed the child to a private hospital. With serious injuries, the toddler battled for life at the intensive care unit, but in vain. He succumbed to injuries without responding to treatment on Saturday night. S Vinod Kumar, a property developer said that there are specifications to be followed in maintaining the gap of the railings or with regard to the height of the parapet wall.
“The builders should ensure that there is no huge gap between the railings to ensure that such incidents do not occur,” he said. On receiving information, the RS Puram police have registered a case and further investigations are on into this avoidable tragedy.
