Hyderabad: A 12-year-old Kendriya Vidyalaya student died after he fell into a under-construction sump in Sainikpuri on Wednesday. Varun Banerjee, younger son of ex-serviceman, Tinku Banerjee, was resident of Sainikpuri under Kushaiguda police station limits.

When he did not return home till evening, a search began. A friend of his brother told them a pair of shoes, socks and T-shirt were seen near the pit in the temple. The shoes belonged to Varun.

With the help of locals, they tried to look for the body in the pit, but in vain. Later, the police with the help of GHMC staff pumped out water from the pit and swimmers recovered Varun’s body at 3 am.

Varun’s father said that the pit was barricaded with bamboos, but there was no proper safety measure to caution people. “It is their negligence that took my son’s life. Football was his favourite game, he died playing football,” he said. The police registered a suspicious death case and is investigating.
