Chennai: Rs 5 crore worth ganja seized

Chennai: Directorate to revenue intelligence (DRI) sleuths nabbed two men who smuggled ganja into Tamil Nadu from Andhra Pradesh with intent to send it overseas to Sri Lanka on Saturday.

Acting on a tip-off they received two days ago, DRI officials had been watching all activities along the Andhra Pradesh-Tamil Nadu border for the last two days. Zeroing in on a car travelling into the state in the wee hours of Saturday morning, they waited at Sulurpet in Sriharikotta.

As expected, the car crossed into Tamil Nadu, and was cornered. Two men, who were in the car, attempted to flee but were nabbed by the DRI. On investigation, it was found that the two men were only transporting the drugs and had no other role to play, sources said.

The car, which they were driving, was seized and bags of ganja was found in the trunk of the car and also hidden within the seat cushions. A total of 230 kgs of ganja, worth over Rs 5 crore was seized, they said.

The two men confessed that they were to drive to Nagapattinam and hand-over the drugs, which would be sent to Sri Lanka, by sea. They have been taken to the DRI office in T Nagar for further investigation. They have also confessed that five people were involved in smuggling. Further investigations are on.
