Cyberabad police intensify probe into data leak

HYDERABAD: One of India’s largest data heists busted by the Cyberabad police has sent shock waves across the country. Wasting no time, several Centre and state law enforcement agencies (LEAs) and police officials from other states are reaching out to Cyberabad police seeking case details.

Cyberabad police have also begun the process of validating the data of 16.8 crore citizens seized from the fraudsters, with the respective departments, agencies and social media giants. This is to verify the claims of the arrested. This, in turn, helps them to dig deep into the case and the vulnerabilities in which their data is in, police officials said here on Friday.

“We have started a reverse investigation to trace the actual source from where this data has been leaked. Only then can we get clarity if any insiders were involved in the major data breach,” officials said.

The officials also said that the data found in possession of the accused could have already landed in the hands of Cybercriminals and it is most likely that many of such data holders could have landed in their trap and lost their money, they opined.

Police said they are also in the process of taking custody of the seven accused arrested in the case for further interrogation.
