Kozhikode police drive against quotation gangs
Six cases of attacks in past 6 months.
KOZHIKODE: The city police has launched a drive to control the growth of quotation gangs who pose a threat to the citizens’ lives. The gangs indulge in their activities for huge sums of money and lead a luxurious life. Recently, the town police had registered a case against a gang which beat up a group of friends in the city.
The youths were admitted to Kozhikode General Hospital, Beach, with injuries and fractures. “The attackers are members of a quotation gang, that too amateur boxers,” said town police station CI T. Ashraf. The attack was in retaliation for overtaking the vehicles of some persons, the CI added.
Earlier, after Karate Dileep murdered a person here, several gangsters were detained under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act and other laws. Detailed inspections will be conducted in such boxing and karate academies, Mr Ashraf pointed out.
In the last six months, the city police reported six cases of attacks by quotation gangs. “They do it to raise quick money. The youths are either school dropouts or hail from poor families,” said Sarjaz Haman, a city resident who recently helped save a few youngsters from the attack of the gangs.
City Police Commissioner Uma Behra said that she had not received any complaints from residents about the activities of any quotation gangs. “But the department has nabbed several goons and we have also noticed the activities of certain youths, who are into anti-social activities under the influence of drugs and alcohol,” she added.
