HYDERABAD: A month after the body of Dharavath Nikhil, a 25-year-old law graduate, was found in the Nagarjunasagar Project (NSP) canal in Suryapet district on October 11, the case has been transferred to the Crime Investigation Department (CID).

According to the Suryapet police, DGP M. Mahendar Reddy is said to have directed that the case be transferred to the CID following a representation from Nikhil's parents' for a fair investigation by a specialised agency.

While Nikhil's parents claimed that he was the victim of an honour killing, a post-mortem examination report revealed that he had drowned and ruled out the homicide angle.

Nikhil’s parents blamed the family of an upper caste girl with whom he was reportedly in a relationship.

Nikhil reportedly attended a birthday party with his friends on October 10. After his body was found in the canal the next day, Nikhil's parents claimed that the girl's family members murdered him and dumped his body in the canal.

They suspected that the bruises on his face and other body parts were the result of Nikhil being beaten up by the girl's family members. The girl and her family were also questioned by police.
