Guntur: A debt-ridden tenant farmer J. Rama Rao, 50, committed suicide at Dhullipalla village of Sattenapalli Mandal in Guntur district on Saturday.

According to Sattenapalli rural sub-inspector K. Venkat Rao, the tenant farmer had cultivated cotton and chilli in four acres of farmland by borrowing Rs 4 lakh from private moneylenders.

On Saturday, Rama Rao went to farmland to see the crop and was depressed as they were still withering.

He went to Sattenapalli and purchase pesticides, returned to the field and consumed them.

Other farmers noticed him writhing in pain and rushed him to Sattenapalli government hospital for treatment where the doctors declared him brought dead.

He is survived by his wife Lakshmi, 18-year-old daughter, Tirupatamma and 15-year-old son Veeranjaneyulu. Sattenapalli rural police registered a case.
