Kannur: Dr K.V. Ramakrishnan, HoD, mathematical science department, Kannur University, has been  booked for sexually abusing three girl  students. The police registered a case against him  on Saturday  based on a complaint filed by the varsity registrar on Friday.

The police slapped a case under   sections of IPC 354 against the teacher for “assaulting women with intent to outrage their modesty.”

He will be interrogated soon, it is learnt. The women’s organisations demanded that the statement of three students should be registered under IPC 164 before a magistrate as there were chances of the teacher, who is a member of the pro-CPM teachers’ organisation, influencing the victims.

It may be recalled that a two-member committee constituted by the Kannur University on the students’ complaints had found him prima facie guilty.  The committee formed on the directions from  Governor P. Sathasivam consisted of Vineetha Menon (anthropology) and Manjula Poyil (department of history).

DC had reported the sexual harassment incident  on March 4. The Governor,  who is also the Chancellor, had sought a report from the Kannur University vice- chancellor on the students’ complaint.

The committee had come to the conclusion that there was  prima facie evidence of mental and physical harassment by the teacher as alleged by the students.
