Kerala: Rape accused professor surrenders before police

Dr Tharuvana was missing for a few months after the issue came to the notice of the institution.

Kozhikode: Dr Aziz Tharuvana, assistant professor in  the Malayalam department in Farook College here,  who was accused of raping a dalit degree student,  surrendered before the police early on Sunday.   He was produced before the court and  remanded in custody. Dr Tharuvana was missing for a few months after the issue  came to the notice of the institution.

According to the 20-year old student,  Dr  Tharuvana, who is married and has kids,  raped her  at his staff quarters last year and later in March and  April  this year by threatening her and  offering to marry her.   According to  Mr L. Surendran, ACP, Kozhikode south, who is probing the case, sections of IPC 376 (rape) and the SC and ST (prevention of atrocities) Act were   slapped against the accused.
