Fatal Sunday: Eight die in road mishaps in Chennai

The police have also arrested the driver, Rasool Raja, 42 and son of Noor Muhammed of Kovilpatti, of the cement-laden lorry that caused the accident.

Chennai: As many as eight persons were killed in separate road incidents in the city on Sunday evening including an accident involving a MTC bus in which two youths were killed.

R Manikandan (20), of Villivakkam, a painter and his friend S Tamilarasan (19) were on their way to meet a friend when the accident happened on Sunday night. They were riding along Konnur High Road in Aynavaram when the MTC bus (route no.48) plying towards Vallalar Nagar from Villivakkam knocked their bike down. The two of them were thrown off the vehicle and sustained severe head injuries, police said. "Both of them were not wearing helmets and succumbed to their injuries,” a police personnel said. Police arrested the bus driver, S Mani (47).

Two pedestrians were fatally knocked down in hit and run incidents by unidentified vehicles at Ennore Express road and on Grand Northern Truck (GNT) road near Red Hills. Around 6 pm, on Sunday, D Santosh Kumar (36), a casual labourer was knocked down by an unidentified vehicle and Santosh died that night, police said. Around 11 pm, another man, Rajni (25) was fatally knocked down by an unidentified car on GNT road.

In Meenambakkam, 24-year-old painter, M Gurumurthy, died after he lost control of his two-wheeler and rammed it onto the wall of Pazhavanthangal subway. His friend, I Kalaiselvan (24), a gym master survived with injuries, police said. 

In another incident near ICF colony main road, R Suresh Kumar (36) was killed after he collided head on with another bike. J Kishore (20) of Ayapakkam, a second year engineering student was on the other bike and he escaped with injuries, police said.

In another accident, Ritwik, a 19-year old engineering college student was killed after a car ran over him. 

The teenager suffered a fall after his bike hit a van on Madhuravoyal bypass road. A car trailing him ran over Ritwik killing him on the spot, according to Chromepet Traffic investigation wing personnel.  Police have arrested the van and car driver Raviraj and Mohan respectively.

Meanwhile, S Manigandan, a software engineer was killed after a container truck knocked down his two-wheeler near 200 feet road in Madhavaram on Sunday night around 11 pm. Police arrested the truck driver, M Ram Kumar (58), of Virudhunagar district.
