Hyderabad: A man who hitched a ride from an identified biker was allegedly beaten up and robbed late on Saturday night in Jawaharnagar.

The bike rider, who was a stranger to the victim, stopped for him and let him pillion ride on his bike from Radhika crossroads. He stopped the bike near Dammaiguda and started to beat up the victim.

Jawaharnagar police booked a case and started an investigation.

A complaint was received from Nalapally Kranthi Kumar, 45, stating that around Saturday midnight, he took a bus from Lal Bazaar to Radhika crossroads. He later thumbed a ride to go to Nagaram and hopped on to the bike of a stranger.

“He was asking two-wheeler riders for a lift to Nagaram when an unidentified person obliged,” said the investigating officer of Jawaharnagar, Mr D. Narsing Rao.

The biker followed the victim’s directions and proceeded towards Kushaiguda D-Mart to Padmashali at Dammaiguda.

While on their way, the biker suddenly halted the bike and started slapping and beating the victim on his face.

“Scared of the sudden attack, Kumar got down from the bike and proceeded to Dammaiguda main road. Then he realised that he had dropped '4,800 that he was carrying, on the road, Mr Rao added.

He reached the Bharat Petrol pump in Dammaiguda at about 1 am. He noticed that the biker and some other men accompanying him were following him.

He immediately called his brother Abhishek and narrated the whole incident and asked him to come to his rescue, police said.

“Kumar then reached Sai Priya Colony and took shelter in the first floor of an old building. However, the men noticed him and thrashed him with sticks and started shouting ‘donga donga’ (thief, thief). They then snatched his cellphone and fled from the spot,” added the official.

Based on a complaint from Kranthi Kumar, the Jawaharnagar police have booked a case under Section 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code and sent him for medical treatment to Gandhi Hospital.

“We are verifying the CCTV footage in the area for clues and leads on the men behind the offence,” concluded the inspector.
