COIMBATORE: Police have launched a search for three workers from a northern state who fled with valuables after murdering a 48-year-old woman near Annur on the outskirts of Coimbatore in the early hours of Friday.

Police said the three workers, employed by 54-year-old farmer Myilsamy in Annur-Kanuvakarai Thottam, for constructing a new building close to his house for his two daughters, suddenly knocked at his door around 1-30 am today asking for water.

On opening the door, the farmer went to the kitchen to fetch water. The laborers, meanwhile, pursued and brazenly used a power source from the kitchen switch board to administer an electric shock to Myilsamy, who at once fainted.

On hearing his cries, his wife Rajamani came running to the kitchen. She was also attacked by the group with a ‘chapatti rolling pin’, police said. The gang quickly carried her to the newly constructed building where they strangled her with a nylon rope and dumped her body in a gunny bag.

The threesome then ransacked the cupboard and fled with eight sovereigns of gold jewels and Rs 1 lakh cash. At around 4 am, Myilsamy slowly gained consciousness and rang up his relative. The latter along with police rushed to the spot and took Myilsamy to be admitted in a private hospital near Annur.

DSP Jayachandran along with a team inspected the spot and found the bloodstained body of Rajamani inside a gunny bag in the new building. The body was sent to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) for post-mortem. Meanwhile, on a tip-off, a special team police have rushed to Erode-Sennimalai and further investigations are
