Mysuru: In an incident of alleged honour killing, a police investigation has revealed that a 19-year-old girl who was missing for the past two months, was allegedly killed by her own father and cremated on April 29, for reportedly falling in love with a boy from a different community. The incident was reported from HD Kote taluk in Mysuru.

According to Mysuru district SP Mr Ravi D Chennannanavar, the deceased is 19-year-old Shobha. Based on the complaint by Shobha’s lover Ravi on June 24, Sargur police in HD Kote who investigated the case, arrested Shobha’s parents Gurusiddegowda and Mahadevamma on Sunday night. Shobha was the only daughter with the couple having a son, Kiran.

“Shobha’s parents were natives of Dadadahalli in HD Kote taluk but lived in Parvathipura in Nanjangud taluk.  Krishna with whom their daughter Shobha was in love, was their employee. While Shobha’s parents belonged to the Kuruba community, Krishna belonged to the Eediga community. When Shobha and Krishna wanted to get married, her parents  reportedly opposed it. Shobha’s father then allegedly killed her by hitting her on the head head with a stone in Dadadahalli two months ago. The mother reportedly did not stop her husband. They reportedly cremated the body in the crematorium in Dadadahalli the same night and told close relatives that she had died by consuming poison,” said the SP.

“Sargur police have registered a case under sections 302 and 301 of IPC and are investigating. Her brother Kiran, uncle Ramegowda and relative Mahesh who had allegedly supported the crime, have also been arrested. These incidents of social boycott seem to be continuing in villages in HD Kote. We plan to hold awareness programmes in the coming days,” the police official said.

Ravi in his complaint, alleged that Shobha’s parents who had opposed their love affair, had tried to separate them. They had even allegedly assaulted both of them when they were about to run away and get married, and had reportedly warned that they would kill Shobha two months ago.

After Shobha went missing, Ravi suspected it to be a honour killing and sought help from the police by filing a complaint.
