Mankavu: Two held in journo attack

Arrest follows protest by scribes against cop inaction.

KOZHIKODE: Two men were arrested late on Tuesday for attacking a journalist on the premises of a private hospital in Mankavu on Sunday. The arrest follows protest by the Calicut Press Club against the inaction by the police in the case against the culprits. The arrested men are Vijesh Lal from Nallalam and Askar from Arakkinar. Police said that it was not sure whether the arrested men were connected to the youngster who died in a lodge near the hospital under mysterious circumstances.

Malayala Manorama journalist T.D. Dileep had gone to the hospital to collect details of the death, when the mob attacked him. The attackers were let go scot free earlier after they were taken into custody by Medical College police. The arrests were made under IPC 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means)

The incident took place on Sunday morning and the statement of the victim was recorded at midnight. T he accused were nabbed, after fellow journalists showed them to the inspector present at the premises of the hospital in Mankavu. According to the physicians who treated Mr Dileep, he had a narrow escape in the attack. The victim was discharged on Tuesday evening from a private hospital in city.
