Guntur: Minister for civil supplies P. Pulla Rao warned fish and mutton traders about stern action if they cheated the public by weighing less of the product. He conducted surprise checks at the GMC fish and meat market at Lalapeta in Guntur on Sunday. Finding that either there were no weighing machines or faulty ones and that stale fish and meat were being sold to the consumers during his inspection, he directed officials concerned to register cases against the shop owners and directed traders to follow the norms.

The minister found meat was being sold without butchering it in the GMC abattoir and without the seal of municipal officials. He said that the public were lodging complaints about violation of norms and illegalities in the markets, making the checks necessary. He found that three shops were weighing less up to 500gms-1 kg  and directed the legal metrology officials to register cases against the shop owners.

He directed shop owners and traders to sell meat only after obtaining permission from the GMC officials at the abattoir. Mr Rao announced that there was a proposal to construct a new fish market in Guntur. He said that consumption of stale and dead fish will spoil the health and ordered the traders to sell fresh live fish and mutton certified by the veterinary officials. He warned of stern action against traders and vendors cheating the public. GMC commissioner Ch. Anuradha, district CSO E. Chitti Babu and others participated in the checks.
