Muzaffarnagar: A case has been registered against eight named inmates and 25 unidentified prisoners of the district jail for damaging furniture, violence and threatening jail staff, a senior official said on Saturday.

Jail Superintendent Rakesh Singh said the incident took place on Friday after a mobile phone and sim card was recovered from an inmate, Vivek, by the jail warden.

Led by Vivek, other inmates gathered near the main gate of the jail and damaged jail furniture, he said, adding police and jail staff rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

The jail authorities have lodged a complaint against more than 20 inmates for violence and threatening the jail staff, the superintendent said.

Meanwhile, the district authorities have ordered to shift the inmates who were found involved in the Friday's violence to other jails.

Security has also been tightened in jail after the incident, the officer said.
