Female chain snatchers on prowl in Thiruvananthapuram
A missing gold chain was reported at Attukal and sleuths suspected this was the handiwork of a similar suspect.
Thiruvananthapuram: Women have been told to hold on tightly to their gold chains as female nomadic thieves have reportedly entered the capital to make the best out of the festival season.
A female chain snatcher was caught red-handed during pongala at Pullattukari temple, Kazhakoottam on Saturday. Around 48 hours ahead of this, another nomadic female thief was held from a bus in Attingal. A missing gold chain was reported at Attukal and sleuths suspected this was the handiwork of a similar suspect.
Manju, 29, of Tamil Nadu was caught red-handed when she attempted to steal a five sovereign chain from Chandrika, 57, at Pullattukari temple. The organisers and women constables caught the women.
“She resides at Railway purambokke near Varkala with her grandmother and child and claims that she is a widow. She is not revealing anything further,” a police official added.
The profile of the woman arrested at Attingal also was similar. The suspect named Kamachi, 32, resides at railway Purambokke and hails from a colony near Puthoor railway station, Thirunelveli. She was caught red-handed in a bus coming from Karetteu to Attingal when she tried to steal a purse from inside the bag of Mubina, 24, of Pulimathu.
“Some of these female thieves have been arrested before also but they get bailed out quickly by a lobby that also includes advocates. They purposefully speak in the kind of Tamil that cops do not understand,” officials said.
The pictures of the female history sheeters were shared on smartphones to shadow sleuths and lady constables who were on duty at temples.
