Coimbatore:  An apparently trivial denial led to an entirely avoidable and shocking tragedy in the textile city.

A 17-year-old student committed suicide on Tuesday in Coimbatore as her mother refused to buy her a cell phone.

Shruthi, who has finished her Plus-Two exams, asked her mother Latha to buy her a cell phone. She has been demanding a cell phone for a long time.

On Sunday, Shruthi picked a quarrel with her mother on this issue. On Tuesday evening, Latha went to nearby shop leaving Shruthi alone at home.

When Latha returned home, the bedroom door was locked inside and there was no response.

With the help of neighbors Latha broke the door, found Shruthi hanging on the ceiling fan.

Kuniyamuthoor police have lodged a complaint and further investigations are on.
