Chennai: The murder case of the Infosys employee S Swathi at Nungambakkam railway station on Friday will be probed by the Chennai police, a senior police official said. The railway police had been investigating the case so far. A special city police team headed by Nungambakkam assistant commissioner, K.P.S. Devaraj, will be probing the murder, under the supervision of DCP, Triplicane.

The railway police officials pointed that the handing over of the case to the city police was only a part of the procedure. As per police standing orders, the railway superintendent of police may require the district police to take over the entire responsibility for the investigation of a grave crime such as murder or dacoity, the circumstances of which are local in nature and quite unconnected with the railway even though the case occurred within in the jurisdiction of railway police. On his requisition, the district police shall at once take over the investigation.

Swathi, 24, resident of Choolaimedu was waiting at Nungambakkam railway station at around 6.40 am on Friday to travel to her office in Madhindra City, when an unidentified man hacked her to death.  Police had on Saturday released CCTV footage and images of the suspect, captured by private surveillance cameras. City police had already formed four special teams to probe various angles into the murder of Swathi.
