Hyderabad: Sexually abusing young girls in your charge is a heinous enough crime but condoning such acts should be equally punishable.

A mathematics teacher from government girl’s high school, Shivanagar, IDA Bolaram has been accused of sexual abuse by several girls in his school, who told the headmaster about it. The shocking incident came to light after the child rights wing exposed a letter signed by all the staff members, on January 6, 2018, that recommended that the behaviour of the teacher be forgiven since he had apologised for it. The victims, girls from the 8, 9 and 10 standards, had explained their agony at the sexual abuse by their mathematics teacher K. Lingam to their headmaster.

Achutya Rao, president of the Balala Hakkula Sangham, revealed the equally shocking events that occurred after the girls complained.

“The illegal activities came out and the complaint went up to the district educational officer. The DEO of Sangareddy, along with all the staff members held a meeting and resolved that even though the teacher had committed the offences, as he has rendered apologies to the staff, he should be excused, and no action was initiated. We are demanding the removal of the teacher. He should be arrested under the POCSO Act. Such actions will decrease the literacy rate, particularly of girls, and will lead to child marriages,” Mr Rao said. The DEO and the authorities concerned were not available for comment.
