Puducherry: Prohibitory order under section 144 Criminal Procedure Code was re-clamped on the banks of Sankaraparani river here last evening as illegal mining of sand has become rampant once again on the Sankaraparani river belt.

After a lull in their activities as the government has clamped the prohibitory order, the sand mafia is again back in business as the order was lifted a few days back.
A vast stretch has been indiscriminately dug up to extract sand.

“The administration was managed to curb the sand quarrying. However, the menace was again intensified following the lifting of the prohibitory order a few days ago, following which the order was re-clamped on the shores (all areas) of the Sankarabharani river”, said the police officials.

Illegal sand mining was a serious issue along shores of the river where large craters were formed in the river bed, which adversely affected the water level in adjoining areas.

The administration was forced to take strict actions as the state is facing serious water crisis where the mining issue will further intensify the crisis.
