HYDERABAD: The police arrested two women and a man on charges of forcing a distressed Rohingya woman into prostitution. The accused were identified as Neha Fatima, Shabana Begum and Amer Ansari, residents of Alain Hills Colony in Shaheehnagar, which falls within the limits of Balapur Police Station.
According to the police, the 20-year-old victim migrated from Myanmar to India, along with her brother, in 2015. They lived in Royal Colony, Balapur, and the woman worked at a parlour as a beautician.
Three months ago, she had an argument with her brother and left the house. She was wandering around the Government Maternity Hospital in Petlaburj when she was approached and befriended by Neha and Shabana, said Md Maqbool Jani, the Sub-Inspector of Balapur. Neha and Amer took her to Shaheennagar, promising to take care of her. After a few days, they started sending her to male customers, threatening her with dire consequences if she failed to comply with their demands.
“The woman fell ill due to ill-treatment. Yet, they forced her to meet customers. Fed up, the victim approached the police. Based on her complaint, we registered a case and arrested Shabana, Neha and Ansari,” said Mr Jani.
Social activists said that Rohingya women living in refugee camps were vulnerable to sexual exploitation.
