Tamil Nadu: Bank gheraoed for issuing fake notes
Police said Gowrishankar, 37, from Permapalayam had withdrawn Rs 15,000 from IOB bank by issuing a cheque on Friday.
Salem: Public gheraoed a nationalised bank near Modakurichi in Erode district after a Rs 2,000 note issued to a customer turned out to be a counterfeit currency.
Police said Gowrishankar, 37, from Permapalayam had withdrawn Rs 15,000 from IOB bank by issuing a cheque on Friday. He had then gone to deposit the money in his account with SBI bank; however the cashier at the counter had told him that the Rs 2,000 note was ‘fake’. Gowrishankar had immediately gone to the IOB bank and asked the staff to replace that note. However, the staff refused to accept the counterfeit note, which triggered a protest as public too joined him in the issue.
Another member of the public, Sivasankar, 35 from Kariakvundanvalasai also alleged that he too received six fake Rs 2000 notes, when he had withdrawn Rs 3 lakh from the same bank on July 20. The bank refused to exchange those notes, when Sivasankar approached on Monday. As the situation turned tense, the bank manager Ms. Nithya locked herself from inside barring entry to the public.
