Hyderabad: Locals from Pyararam in Bommalaramaram mandal assaulted five members of a special team of Cyberabad police when they went to nab one of the village residents, late Saturday night.

The officers dressed in plain clothes entered Pyararam in a private car to nab a suspect involved in a firing incident in Shamirpet, police said.

Taking them to be fake police as the personnel failed to produce identity cards, several men, wielding lathis, from the nearby Pararam tanda assaulted them. There was a scuffle between police and the local tanda residents when the officers tried to arrest the suspect. The assaulters also damaged the car they had arrived in even before Rachakonda police could reach the spot.

However it was found that the special team was from Shamirpet police and had come to nab a suspect involved in the Uddamari firing incident that occurred on January 25.

Bhongir ACP Venkat Reddy said that the tense situation was brought under control and a case was registered against the villagers for attacking on-duty police personnel.

It may be recalled that on January 24, three unidentified armed masked men, including the suspect from Pyararam village, on a bike attacked the staff of a wine shop and took away Rs 2 lakh cash in Uddamarri village under Shamirpet police limits.
