The highest number of cases registered were for outraging the modesty (11,335 cases nationwide), sexual exploitation of both boys and girls (8,904) and abduction and kidnapping (37,854 cases in the country).

Chennai: The Chennai police on Friday arrested a man for kidnapping and marrying a 15-year-old girl. On April 20, the girl's father employed at a private firm lodged a complaint at Pallikaranai police station that his daughter had gone missing.

The cops were reportedly searching for the girl from then. The family lived in Kovilambakkam and the girl was studying at a government school in the same area.

After the police received information that the girl could be in Vellore district, they found her and the man, identified as R.Gandhi at Ambur in Vellore district. He was immediately arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (Pocso) and remanded in Puzhal jail. The girl is undergoing medical tests.

According to preliminary investigations, R.Gandhi was working as an electrician and hailed from MGR Nagar where the girl also resided. On April 20, he took her and married her in one of the temples on the way to Ambur. Further investigations are on.
