Minister's PA' promises youth government jobs, swindles Rs 27 lakh

The cousin had approached Manjunath's family and got his money back.

Bengaluru: The Subramanya Nagar police arrested a fraudster who posed himself as a personal assistant to a minister and duped people of Rs 27 lakh by promising them government jobs. The accused, Manjunath, who hails from Tumkur, is a resident of Magadi Road. The police said that Manjunath was unemployed, but promised government jobs to other unemployed people claiming to be the PA of Water Resources Minister D.K. Shivakumar.

A victim, Venkatesh, filed a complaint with the Subramanya Nagar police last Monday, saying that Manjunath befriended him at a library in Rajajinagar and promised him a government job using his influence. Venkatesh paid Manjunath Rs 15 lakh in instalments and even after several days, he did not get any response. When Venkatesh started putting pressure, Manjunath issued him a fake appointment letter in the revenue department. Only when Venkatesh went to report for the job, he found out that it was a fake order.

The police tracked down Manjunath and arrested him along with his girlfriend, Sudharani, 24, who handled his finances.

The probe revealed that the two had similarly duped another unemployed woman from Malleswaram of Rs 12 lakh by promising her a first division assistant’s job at the high court. The woman had filed a complaint with the Malleswaram police last week.A senior police officer said that Manjunath had duped one of his cousins in Tumakuru by promising him a government job. The cousin had approached Manjunath’s family and got his money back.
