Coimbatore: A herd of wild elephants attacked and injured two persons of a family near Kanuvai in the suburbs of Coimbatore in the wee hours of Sunday when they came to attend a family function.

Forest department sources said Thirumoorthy, 61, a resident of Pollachi and his daughter, 40-year-old Karupathaal, who had come down to their relative's place near here, met with this unseemly incident. Thirumoorthy had gone into the nearby forest area to answer nature's call when he failed to notice a herd of three wild elephants standing behind a bush.

One of the elephants lifted him by is trunk and flung him some ten feet away, sources said. Hearing his cries, Thirumoorthy's daughter came running to help her father, but she too was attacked by the herd. Neighbors lighted fire torches and chased away the herd, even as Thirumoorthy and Karupathaal were rushed to a nearby private hospital and are being treated in its ICU.
