Kozhikode: The additional sessions court-I here would pronounce the punishment for the two SDPI workers convicted in the murder of Nasiruddin Azeez (22), an IUML worker of Velom, on Friday.  

Nasiruddin Azeez was stabbed to death at Puthalath in Velom panchayat in the district on July 15 by two SDPI workers. The court in its verdict on Wednesday had found guilty  the first and second accused Kappachery Basheer and Kolliyil Anthru respectively, in the murder and also exonerated the accused three to seven.

The first accused Kappacheril Basheer had contested as SDPI candidate in the last local body election while Nasiruddin Azeez was an active participant in the anti-extremist campaign.

The court examined a total of 37 witnesses during the trial of the case. The accused 1 and 2 were slapped with section 302 of Indian Penal Code for murder while the accused three to seven were charged with destroying  evidence, helping the accused to evade arrest and covering up the crime.  

The crime was executed while Nasiruddin was pillion riding with his relative Abdul Rauf. The assassins waylaid the vehicle near the Ananthoth Salafi Masjid at Cherapuram, Velam and stabbed the victim. The statement of Abdul Rauf as eyewitness became crucial in the trial.
