Two years jail for man, family in dowry harassment case

HYDERABAD: A 43-year-old A Ravi and his family members accused of harassing his wife A Sreesha demanding additional dowry physically and mentally, were sentenced to undergo imprisonment for two years. A court at Ramannapet which delivered the judgement on Tuesday directed all the seven accused to pay a fine of Rs 1,000 each.

In August 2015, Sreesha lodged a complaint with Ramannapet police saying that at the time of her marriage with Ravi, her parents gave Rs 10 lakh cash, 15 tola gold and household articles as dowry. After six months of their marriage, Ravi, his mother A. Koteshwari, his brother A Kiran, his sister C. Kalyani, her husband C Srikanth Reddy and other family members J Janaki Ram and J Laxmi started harassing her physically and mentally for additional dowry of Rs 5 lakh.

This harassment increased after she gave birth to a girl child and she was evicted from the house along with the child. Ravi and his family members were summoned in the presence of the elders, who counselled them. Despite this, the accused persons continued harassing her and also forced her to write a note stating that, her husband and his family members are not responsible if she commits suicide.

A case was registered and all the seven persons were arrested. Later, the case was put to trial. During the trial, Judge S Chandana convicted the accused and awarded them punishment.
