Coimbatore: An elderly couple was found battered to death with an iron rod at their residence in Karumathampatty on the city outskirts here on Sunday.

Relatives who became suspicious after Kumarasamy, 65, and his wife Sundarambal, 58, failed to take repeated calls since Saturday, went to check and were shocked to find the couple lying dead in the morning.

Police said that Kumarasamy lay dead on a cot in front of his farm residence, while his wife was found dead inside. Police suspect the murder could have happened a day ago as the bodies of the couple had already begun to rot.

As two daily wagers employed in the power-loom unit owned by Kumarasamy had gone missing, police suspect their role in the brutal murder of the couple. Police retrieved an iron rod used to assault the couple to death.

After preliminary enquiries, police ruled it out as a case of murder for gain as all jewels and money were intact in the house.”Kumarasamy had issues with some labourers over payment of wages, which could have been a reason for the murder,” said a policeman.

A sniffer dog and fingerprint experts were pressed into service. The couple has two daughters who are married and settled elsewhere. Karumathampatty police have registered a case of murder and are on the lookout for the missing power-loom unit workers.
