Harassed by money-lenders, couple commit suicide in Tamil Nadu

The couple had left a suicide note in which the duo claimed that they had taken this extreme step unable to withstand the harassment.

MADURAI: In an extremely painful development, an elderly couple from Madurai committed suicide, allegedly due to harassment from ‘usurious’ moneylenders near Kodai road in Dindigul district on Saturday. Police sources told DC here that Kesavan (60) and Gayathri (55) from Kamarajapuram, Madurai, were found lying unconscious near Kodai road in Dindigul this morning.

The locals immediately alerted the police. Gayathri died on the spot, while Kesavan died failing treatment at the Government hospital in Dindigul. The couple had left a suicide note in which the duo claimed that they had taken this extreme step unable to withstand the harassment of money lenders. Kesavan, who had worked in a printing unit in Madurai, had borrowed money from two local moneylenders. On Friday, the couple went to Tiruchendur, and they reached Kodai road around midnight by train, said the police source.

Then the duo consumed poison near Kodai road station and within few minutes Gayathri died on the spot. After noticing his wife had died, Kesavan had also cut his hand with a knife. The couple had mentioned names of two moneylenders, Elango and Gopi in the suicide note. The police have registered a case and further investigations are on.
