NTR District Sees 19% Dip in Crime Rate
Vijayawada: NTR district commissioner of police Kanthi Rana Tata said that overall crime rate registered a 19 per cent decrease while crimes against women also dipped by 16 per cent in the corresponding year 2023 due to conviction based policing and awareness programmes.
Addressing the annual meet at Vijayawada on Saturday, the CP said that while over 17,174 crime cases were reported in 2021, the number dropped to 15,329 in 2022, and 12,380 cases in 2023 and the conviction rate increased to 68 per cent in 2023.
He stated that due to visible policing, undertaking awareness programmes, efficient management of women police services, implementation of PD Act on offenders brewing arrack, etc the crime rate has reduced in the district.
The number of pending cases has come down significantly in 2023, while 6,559 cases were pending by 1 January 2023, by December 30 the count came down to 5,523 cases, which is a 16 per cent dip due to tremendous efforts in the court monitoring system.
Bodily offences have also decreased. In 2021, there were 49 murders, 42 in 2022, and 32 in 2023. Similarly, 131 cases of physical assault were registered in 2021 and 100 cases were registered in 2022, the count came down to 66 in 2023.
Burglary cases also dropped in 2023 compared to previous years. Which are 238 in 2021, 217 in 2022, and 187 in 2023. The road accidents have seen a slight decrease in 2023, while 1312 cases were reported in 2023 with 353 deaths against 1358 in 2022 with 418 deaths.
CP Kanthi Rana stated that the cases of crime against women registered in 2023 were 770, in 86 per cent of cases police completed investigation, and the accused were arrested. In 73 per cent of the cases, chargesheets were filed within a stipulated time.
While 79 Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) cases were registered in the district in 2022, 76 Pocso cases were registered in 2023. While in 73 cases victims were lured by the accused in the name of love and marriage in 2022, this year 71 victims were lured.
Rape cases were almost the same as last year. While 46 rape cases were registered in 2022, 45 were registered in 2023 and, in 35 cases victims were lured by the accused in the name of love and marriage, said the commissioner.
CP Kanthi Rana explained that regarding Ganja smuggling cases in 2022, 103 cases registered and 205 arrested with 765 kilos of ganja seizure and in 2023, 271 cases registered, 697 arrested and 1400 kilos seized worth 58 lakh approx. In drunk and drive cases, 1,876 arrested, 623 jailed, 1253 imposed fines, 691 minors driving and 1,6590 triple driving in 2022 and 1974 arrested, 389 jailed, 1,510 imposed fines, 423 minors driving and 31,054 triple driving cases in 2023.
