AP man arrested for cheating Indian students in US

Hyderabad cybercrime police arrested a man from Andhra Pradesh on Friday for cheating US-based Indian students by offering a 10 per cent discount on university semester fee.

Police arrested Kanolla Ashok Kumar, 28, based on a case filed by a Cyberabad resident, who had paid Rs 4,38,599 to get a 10% discount in the semester fee of his son studying in University of West Florida.

Officials said Ashok and his associates Tarun, who resides in the USA, and Waquar, who lives in New Delhi, used to work in different consultancy organisations and had access to student databases. With that, they are contacting students and telling them they can pay their semester fee for a discount of 10 per cent.

After collecting the amount, the fraudsters pay the fee with debit or credit cards. After showing the “Payment completed” status to the students, the fraudsters apply for a card chargeback and get their money back, and the student’s fee status goes back to “Fee unpaid”.

Officials seized a mobile phone from Ashok Kumar.
