Bhubaneswar: The Additional District Judge (ADJ) on Thursday awarded death penalty for a man who brutally murdered his wife in Ghatikia under Khandagiri police limits in Bhubaneswar on June 9, 2022.
Sanjit Das was the convict who committed the heinous crime.
The court pronounced the judgment by terming the barbaric murder case as the ‘rarest of rare’ crime to set an example for society.
“It was a heinous crime. Convict Sanjit Das stabbed his wife with a knife 33 times over a trivial issue. To destroy evidence, he even slit the throat of his six-year-old daughter Pari. Generally, a husband is considered as the saviour of his wife and daughter. However, the convict murdered his wife in a barbaric manner. The Court considered the crime as a ‘rarest of rare’ case and ordered the death penalty to the convict,” said government lawyer Salil Pradhan.
“After considering the heinousness of a crime in all aspects when the court feels that life imprisonment is not enough punishment for the convict to repent, life sentence is pronounced. Hence, considering the case as a ‘rarest of rare’ crime the court pronounced the death sentence. Statements of as many as 15 witnesses including the daughter of the convict and the family members were considered for the sentence. Apart from it, experts and forensic evidence were also considered for the pronouncement of the sentence,” he added.
