Kurnool: Kurnool Taluka police on Wednesday arrested auto driver S. Mahbub Basha, accused of causing the death of two women.

On May 19, Kurnool Taluka police received a complaint that bodies of two unidentified women had been found in the pond at Nagaravanam near Gargeyapuram village of Kurnool mandal.

Investigations identified the women as Aruna and Janaki from Mahbubnagar district in Telangana. They had migrated to Kurnool a few years ago and became sex workers. They had come across Mahbub Basha once. Following some differences, Janaki had beaten the auto driver. From then on, Mahbub Basha harboured a grudge against her.

On May 18, Janaki and Aruna had gone to a pond near Gargeyapuram village to wash their clothes. On finding them at the pond, Mahbub Basha pushed Janaki from behind into the water. In the process, Mahbub Basha also fell into the pond. Aruna tried to pull him out but fell into the pond as well.

The auto driver, however, managed to come out as he had fallen near the embankment.

Kurnool Taluk police arrested him on Wednesday and sent him for remand on Thursday.

Police are also investigating the death of another woman, who had been found dead close to the pond on the same day.
