Ongole: Low literacy rate hits Prakasam

Ongole: The 20-point economic programme implementation committee chairman Y. Srinivasa Sesha Sai Babu on Sunday expressed serious concern over the low literacy rate in Prakasam district and added that literacy rate is less than state average in the district.

He said while the state average literacy rate is 74 per cent, Prakasam district registered 63 per cent. He instructed the officials to improve literacy rate.

He addressed a review meeting in R&B guest house in Addanki. Spea-king on the occasion, he directed the officials to launch a special drive to increase the literacy rate where the literacy is less than fifty per cent.

He stressed on the need to improve the literacy rate in SC, ST colonies in the villages and felt that the low literacy rate and lack of irrigation facilities are main reasons for backwardness of Prakasam district.

He instructed the officials to readmit the dropouts in the schools. He said he would come back to Prakasam district in a month and conduct a district-level review meeting in Ongole. Earlier, he inaugurated the drinking water purification plant set up at a cost of Rs 4.5-lakh at Vempadu.

The in-charge collector, Dr. Hari Jawaharlal and Telugu Rythu state president Karanam Balara-makrishna Murthy were among those who participated.
