OMC to get Rs 40 crore for water supply
Pipeline to be laid from Edugundlapadu with funds from AMRUT
Ongole: The government has agreed to release Rs 40 crore to the Ongole Municipal Corporation to improve drinking water supply to the city. The minister for municipal administration, Dr P. Narayana, who visited Ongole on Sunday, assured the people that the government would release the money soon for the project and the OMC would lay drinking water pipelines from Yedugundlapadu to Summer Storage Tanks (SSTs) in Ongole for improved supply, having done so earlier too.
The OMC is currently supplying drinking water twice a week. If two more pipelines are laid and if water is available in the Nagarjunasagar canal, water can be drawn from it. If water is not available there, the OMC will draw it from the Gundlakamma channel at Yedugundlapadu and fill up the SSTs.
The municipal corporation has already submitted the proposals to the municipal administration department to take up the work under the Atal Mission for Rejuven-ation and Urban Transfo-rmation (AMRUT) Sche-me.
The municipal corporation will prepare a det-ailed project report and submit it to the government to take up the pipeline laying work in the ensuing summer.
Municipal commissioner S. Venkata Krishna said, "If laying of the two pipelines is completed, the OMC can supply adequate drinking water to the residents. Similarly, the OMC will develop roads, parks and side drains under the AMRUT scheme," he added.
