Big bird crashlands at Mangaluru airport, flights diverted

The flights from Delhi and Dubai were diverted to Bengaluru, another from Dubai was sent to Kochi.

Officials said that around 5 pm on Tuesday, the MiG 29 of the Indian Navy which was on a routine training sortie experienced a hydraulic emergency and it was diverted to Mangaluru airport.

Mangaluru: The runway of Mangaluru International Airport was shut for about four hours after the tyre of a MiG fighter aircraft burst while making an emergency landing on Tuesday evening.

Officials said that around 5 pm on Tuesday, the MiG 29 of the Indian Navy which was on a routine training sortie experienced a hydraulic emergency and it was diverted to Mangaluru airport.

While making an emergency landing in Mangaluru airport, the fighter’s tyre burst and it could not be cleared off the runway. As the MiG was on the runway, none of the commercial flights could land or takeoff. Three flights were delayed.

The MiG pilot was safe and the incident did not create any damage to the runway.  According to Airport Director J.T. Radhakrishna, three flights – one from Delhi and two from Dubai were diverted. The flights from Delhi and Dubai were diverted to Bengaluru, another from Dubai was sent to Kochi.
