Kozhikode: The Thamarassery diocese has launched a campaign against the Kerala Church (Properties and Institutions) Bill 2019 terming it as anti-Church and an attempt to take over Church properties.
Bishop Remegiose Inchananiyil and the priests have criticised the draft Bill which has been placed before the public by the Kerala Law Reforms Commission seeking suggestions and corrections.
The bishop urged believers at a programme here recently to rise up against the attempts to impose the Act on the faithful and take over its properties. He also warned the government saying that the Bill would trigger agitations.
The Catholic Laymen’s Association (CLA), the believers’ forum, based here has also come out against the Bill, terming it as a watered down version of the earlier one submitted by Justice V.R. Krisha Iyer to the law reforms committee in 2009.
The rebel organisations allege that the Church Act 2009 has been shelved as it would curb the freedom enjoyed by Church authorities who have looted the Church wealth. The reformists have flayed the Act as it does not ensure individual freedom within the Church. It allows the alien influence, including the Canon Law, which is against the law of the land, and Roman hegemony, it was pointed out.
