Chennai: In a shocking incident, a mother and daughter committed suicide by hanging in their residence at Virugambakkam on Wednesday evening.
The tragedy has stunned residents of Bhavani street in Virugambakkam.

The 33-year-old mother and her husband chided their 15-year-old-daughter, Rajeshwari, for not preparing well for examinations, police said. The daughter was appearing for her SSLC examination this year.

Balasubramani, who is in the trade of supplying textile materials for cine productions, was away at a temple, when the duo took the drastic step.
The deceased, Kavitha (33), a housewife and her daughter, a student of a private school, ended their lives by hanging.

Balasubramani, who made up with his daughter, instructed his wife not to continue with the scolding.  He then left for the temple. When he returned a little later after 6 pm, he was shocked to find both his wife and daughter dead in adjacent rooms.

Both the bodies were taken to Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem while a case was registered by Virugambakkam Police into the incident.

“We suspect the girl could have killed herself first, and the mother could have followed suit,” said a senior police officer. Counsellors have advised students not to put pressure on themselves on exam related issues.
