2 Punjab cops who swindled Rs 6 crore held

The two had gone missing after they were suspended and a case was registered against them over the incident.

Kochi: The Kochi city police on Tuesday arrested two Punjab policemen from Fort Kochi for their involvement in the misappropriation of Rs 6.6 crore seized by the Punjab  police during a raid conducted on the house of a priest in Jalandhar  a month ago.

The two had gone missing after they were suspended and a case was registered against them over the incident.

The arrested are ASI Joginder Singh of No. 1131/Patiala, son of Prem Singh and resident of Phase I Urban Estate, Patiala, and ASI Rajpreet Singh of No. 661/Patiala, son of Dharam Singh, resident of H.No. 86, New Mahindra Colony, Patiala. They were booked along with another person in the case registered by the Punjab police.

It was on March 29, the Khanna police raided the house of Father Antony Madassery at Partappura in Jalandhar. He is said to be a close aide of Bishop Franco Mulakkal who is accused of raping a nun in a convent at Kuravil-angadu.

According to the city police, the arrests were made after receiving a tip-off about the two staying in Fort Kochi under fake names and address.

City Police Commiss-ioner S. Surendran said that a raid was conducted following the alert given to hotels and homestays. “Their details are being verified. The Punjab police has been alerted already,” he said. The priest had alleged that an amount of `6.65 cr had gone missing from the total Rs 16.65 crore seized from his home.

The crime unit of Punjab police arrested another accused Surinder Singh, a resident of Pathankot in connection with the case and booked the accused ASIs Joginder Singh and Rajpreet Singh along with him.
